Evaluation

What have you learnt from completing this task?
From this task I have learnt how to use Photoshop. Before this task I had never used it before and I have learned many of the basic tools. I have also learned how to use blogger to display my work. It have also taught me how to use my time efficiently in order to meet a deadline.

How have you used technology?
I used Photoshop to make the college magazine I used Photoshop because there are many layers to a magazine so using Photoshop makes it easier to edit each layer. Photoshop also makes it more precise to edit each image/layer. I also used publisher to do my contents page, this was because its better to use for text boxes and simple layouts. I used my blog in order to show all of my work and progress.
I used a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 digital camera to take my photos and i used it on 6 megapixels.

What conventions have you used and why?
On my magazine i used the following conventions

  • Masthead- To tell the reader what they are buying
  • Main Image- To attract a reader to the front cover and to go along with the main feature of the magazine
  • Plug- This is to attract the reader by telling them they can have a chance of winning something
  • Bar code and Issue number
  • Features- To tell the reader whats inside the magazine without them having to look through the whole contents

What would you change if you were to do this task again?
If I were to do this task again I would of taken more pictures to choose from. This would of meant having a bigger variety to work with and compare how well they went with the rest of the magazine.
I would also of taken the image in a different location so that i didn't have to place the image onto a separate background. This would of made the image look more natural.

Conventions of a magazine

Masthead- Bright colour so that it stands out, fits in with the rest of the colours on the front page.

Main Image- The main image is of a college age male holding textbooks, this fits in with the concept of the whole magazine.

Headline- The headline is the largest text on the cover and it usually relates to the main image.

Smaller Feature- There are many smaller features on this magazine front cover, these will all be featured in the magazine but arn't the main attention grabber.

Barcode- The barcode here is featured in the bottom right corner and will also feature the Issue Number and the Date and Price.

Masthead- Separate from the rest of the front page- makes it stand out.

Main Feature- Fits in with the rest of the front cover. Links in with the image.

Smaller Feature- These have their own small images which link in with the individual stories.

Main Image- The main image shows a girl who seems to be excited about her results. This fits in with the theme of college and also the main feature as that includes results.

Colour- The colour on here is mainly pink colours and the background fits in with the colours of the text.

Font- The font on this front page is the same for the main features and the mast head, this shows that they are each important.

Masthead- This is again featured at the top of the page and is clear from the rest of the image.

College magazine front cover

Textural Analysis

Camera Angle- Medium Close Up

In this advert there is a young male with his hair styled, therefore showing he has used the product. in the background there is an attractive woman leaning over a pool table with a low cut top on, therefore perceiving her as a sex object. They are both young and therefor that shows the target audience of the product.

The words 'With high precision' fit in with the game they are playing in the image, within the game they need to have high precision as well as with the 'styling'.

'You can score the perfect hit' has a double meaning to it as its saying that with this product you can 'score' the girl as well as the game. The ball he is aiming at also lines up to where the woman is stood. When you score the 8 ball in this game you win, he is about to score this ball and by the look on his face he knows he is.
When he wins the game he'll win the girl.

In the background there is a chandelier therefore perceiving that when you use this product you go to higher end places. One of the main colours used around the image is red. This colour shows seduction which is the overall message of the advert.

Practice Photoshop

Practice Photoshop

I got images of sand dunes, the Eiffel Tower, a bear and an astronaut off Google images. I opened them into Photoshop starting off with the sand dune. I scaled the image to the size of the page.
Next I put in the Eiffel Tower, I used the polygonal lasso tool to cut away the actual tower from the background on the image I saved. To get the effect that it was behind a sand dune I cut out and area of the dune and then copied it onto a separate layer. I put this layer over the bottom of the Eiffel Tower.

To cut out the astronaut I cut out blocks of the image around the part I wanted and then used the eraser tool to erase the rest of the unwanted image. On the bear I used the feather effect as it has fur, apart from that I use the same technique I used with the astronaut.

To edit the image further I used the saturation tool on the sand dunes to make them more golden and appealing.
